About Income Tax Calculator

Enter your income to estimate tax across the applicable bracket slabs, with the total due and your effective rate.

The most valuable thing this shows is the difference between your marginal rate and your effective rate. Income tax is progressive: each slab's rate applies only to the income falling inside that band, not to your whole income. Someone in a 30% bracket does not pay 30% of everything they earn โ€” they pay 0% on the personal allowance, a lower rate on the next band, and 30% only on the portion above that threshold. The effective rate is almost always considerably lower than the marginal one.

This corrects a genuinely costly misconception: that a pay rise pushing you into a higher bracket can leave you worse off. It cannot. Only the income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so more gross income always means more net income. People have declined raises and overtime over this misunderstanding.

Treat the result as an estimate. Real tax liability depends on deductions, allowances, credits, pension and retirement contributions, filing status, regional taxes, and which regime you have elected where a choice exists. Rules also change between tax years. Use this to understand the shape of your liability, then confirm the actual figure with your tax authority's own calculator or an accountant.

How to use Income Tax Calculator

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective rate?

Marginal is the rate on your next pound or dollar earned โ€” your top bracket. Effective is total tax divided by total income, which is always lower because the earlier slabs are taxed at lower rates or not at all.

Can a pay rise leave me worse off?

No. Only the income above a bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so gross increases always mean net increases. The belief that a raise can reduce take-home pay is a persistent and costly misunderstanding.

How accurate is this estimate?

It applies bracket rates to the income you enter. It cannot know your deductions, credits, pension contributions, filing status or regional taxes, all of which change the real figure. Treat it as indicative and confirm with your tax authority.

Is my income data stored?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is transmitted or saved.
