<title>My Awesome Page</title> <meta name="description" content="A short, compelling description for search engines." /> <meta name="keywords" content="developer tools, free, online" /> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" /> <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />

About Meta Tag Generator

Fill in your page details and get a complete block of meta tags ready to paste into your <head>, with live length indicators showing where Google will truncate.

Both length limits are real costs in opposite directions. Google truncates titles at roughly 600 pixels of rendered width โ€” around 55-60 characters, though wide letters consume the budget faster โ€” and descriptions at about 155-160 characters. A title cut mid-phrase loses the differentiator you put at the end, which is usually the part that earns the click. A 70-character description wastes half the space you were given.

The description does not affect rankings and has not for many years. It affects click-through rate, which is worth optimising on its own terms: it is effectively ad copy for a free listing. Google also rewrites descriptions frequently, pulling a passage from the page when it judges that a better match for the query โ€” so a well-written on-page paragraph matters as much as the tag.

One correction worth making, because it appears in a great deal of outdated advice: the meta keywords tag does nothing. Google stopped using it in 2009 and announced as much publicly. Including it is harmless but pointless, and it does tell competitors exactly which terms you are targeting.

How to use Meta Tag Generator

  1. Enter your page title, description, canonical URL and indexing preference.
  2. Watch the length indicators and trim until both sit inside the safe range.
  3. Copy the generated tags into your page's <head>.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my title and description be?

Titles around 50-60 characters, since Google truncates near 600 pixels of width rather than at a fixed count. Descriptions around 140-160. Put the distinctive words first in both, because the end is what gets cut.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

No, not directly, and it has not for many years. It affects click-through rate. Google also frequently replaces it with a passage from your page when that better matches the query.

Should I include meta keywords?

No. Google stopped using the keywords tag in 2009. It has no effect on ranking and simply publishes your target terms to anyone who views the source.

What does the robots meta tag control?

Whether a page may be indexed and whether its links are followed. noindex keeps it out of search results; nofollow stops link equity passing through. Note that a page blocked in robots.txt can never be seen, so a noindex tag on a blocked page is never read.
